Why a Debate Topic Paper Should Be Considered

Why a Debate Topic Paper Should Be ConsideredIt is quite common to find debate topics in a debate scenario that only give you a few seconds of air time, usually there are people who want the debate topic paper to be as short as possible. These types of topics have caused some students to use very little or no debate topic paper at all because they feel it is not worth the effort and will only waste time and effort if the paper gets to the point of debate. The arguments are commonly from opponents of the death penalty who do not want to spend their time discussing 'life sentence'innocent until proven guilty' but rather spend their time stating why they feel the death penalty is inappropriate or does not fit the crime. To have a more meaningful debate, the students need to prepare a longer and more detailed topic paper. If a student cannot refute a point that their opponent makes, they will be left with having to remain silent in a difficult debate. For example, they will have to explain how the person arguing against the death penalty can effectively disprove the point, and what that proof is going to look like. Many students who find the topic papers to be too brief may have to read through a lot of evidence to discover that there is really no case for or against the death penalty. As a teacher, I suggest that students get started at the beginning of the debate and try to get to different points. They may find that some of the arguments of one opponent are not that strong and others, such as the opponent of the death penalty, will be just as strong. As students learn how to move back and forth from the topics, they will gain a more advanced and deeper understanding of what other points they should be attacking with their arguments.Students will have the opportunity to argue against every argument the opponent makes and may also try to prove that the argument being made by the opponent is untrue. Students who spend too much time on some of the points of the opponen t may have a hard time getting back to the point they were originally trying to make, however. In this situation, I suggest students try to move on to other topics that they feel are more interesting. They also need to remember to be specific about their topics when preparing a topic paper on the death penalty. Each topic should be researched, specifically researched, and its veracity established. The material should be fairly easily proven or refuted. There are so many topics in a topic paper that a student can select from. They can find many that deal with the subject of criminal justice, juvenile justice, life imprisonment, and many other topics. The problem arises when a student has not researched to research the topic of their topic. The length of the topic paper may seem unimportant, but in a debate it can be the difference between winning and losing. It would be well worth it to spend a little extra time researching your topic so that your opponent does not get an advantage beca use you did not research it.
